Coastal flooding continues around high tide, and Sunday–Monday king tides could make it worse

What’s newReissued overnight; NWS now flags a possible extension or upgrade to a warning for Sunday and Monday.

Moderate coastal flooding is expected again on low roads, lots and parks near the water, for a couple of hours around each high tide, with isolated road closures possible. Predicted high tides at Virginia Key are about 7:40PM tonight, then 8:10AM and 8:20PM Saturday. The Weather Service says the advisory will likely be extended into next week or upgraded to a warning for Sunday and Monday, when the king tides peak along with more rain and onshore wind. Avoid driving through standing saltwater and don’t park where it pooled this week. Rip current risk stays high on the beaches through Saturday evening.

Two strikes to put in the calendar: doctors from Oct. 28, and Metro, FGC and Rodalies on Nov. 11

Metges de Catalunya’s open-ended strike of doctors in the Catalan public health system starts Wednesday, Oct. 28, so expect possible disruption to appointments; that morning a march leaves at 9AM from Avinguda Diagonal at Doctor Marañón (Zona Universitària metro) toward the Health Department at the Maternitat. Separately, unions representing Barcelona Metro, FGC and Rodalies workers say they will join the general strike over housing and wages on Wednesday, Nov. 11. Minimum services for that day haven’t been announced yet.

After 426 days, the longest-staying dog at a Cincinnati shelter has gone home

Donny had been at Cincinnati Animal CARE longer than any other dog on site: 426 days. A stranger paid his adoption fee, and donors added a crate, a collar and $200 toward training. The shelter says it is at critical capacity, with hundreds of dogs still waiting.

Strangers covered the fee, the crate, the collar and the classes. Donny supplied the patience.

A border collie spent two hours at the bottom of a 10-foot sinkhole, then jumped the last bit herself

Chiefland Fire got the call at 5:55AM on Oct. 16: a dog stuck in a narrow sinkhole that had opened near a road. Rescuers phoned technical rescue specialists for advice, and a local masonry company brought a mini excavator, until limestone stopped it and crews switched to hand tools. As they got close, the dog leapt toward the top and her owner caught hold, around 8:20AM. She walked away without apparent injuries.

Greenwich, Connecticut → Mamaroneck, New York

Turtle the cat vanished for 571 days and turned up six miles away, across the state line

Turtle slipped through a gap in a storm door in March 2025. Rocco Autero of Rocket Lost Pet Rescue set up trail cameras and a trap; the cat kept visiting but never went in, and then the sightings stopped. Autero kept checking anyway, and this month he spotted a Nextdoor post about a cat found in Mamaroneck, New York. A microchip scan confirmed it. His family says he came home acting as if nothing had happened.

Where he spent those 571 days is between Turtle and the state of New York.

A monarch butterfly with repaired, feathered wings

Odd · repair job

Colleen Attara’s art studio

An artist fixed a monarch’s broken wing with tissue paper, a glue stick and three craft feathers, and it flew

Mixed-media artist Colleen Attara found the monarch in the grass outside her studio with its left wing broken near the body. Following advice she found online, she chilled it in the fridge for six minutes to calm it, then patched the wing with tissue paper and a solid glue stick. That wasn’t enough for flight, so she added a blue and a red feather to the broken wing and a gray one to the other for balance. Out the car window, it fluttered and took off. It was a male on his migration south.

Somewhere south of here, a monarch is migrating in custom plumage.

The fuel still leaking from WWII wrecks has its own crowded bacterial ecosystem

Researchers led by Awei Bainivalu of the University of the South Pacific sampled oil from two sunken Japanese ships, the tanker Shinkoku Maru and the Kiyosumi Maru. DNA sequencing turned up about 1,500 kinds of bacteria living in fuel that is toxic to most marine life, including groups known to eat petroleum hydrocarbons. They haven’t shown yet that the microbes are actually breaking the oil down, but if they are, the wrecks could supply their own cleanup crew. The study is in Marine Pollution Bulletin.

The new belemnite species from Wyoming

Science · fossils

Sundance Formation · Wyoming

Paleontologists named a new squid relative from Wyoming, and the headline fact is that it was chunky

Wyoteuthis linsterorum was a belemnite, an extinct cousin of squid, from a shallow sea that covered Wyoming about 160 million years ago. Its fossil internal skeleton is about 4 inches long but up to 2.4 inches across, the thickest belemnite on record; the whole animal may have reached nearly 2 feet. It also belongs to a family thought to have mostly died out millions of years earlier. The paper is in Papers in Paleontology.

“Fattest belemnite ever identified” is a narrow title, but nobody else is contesting it.

Primitivo vines grown under solar panels produced bunches nearly three times heavier

University of Bari researchers put panels over part of a 2.2-acre vineyard in one of Italy’s hottest growing regions. The partly shaded vines grew shoots more than twice as long as those in full sun, and their bunches weighed almost three times as much by harvest, with less sugar and more organic acids. Professor Giuseppe Ferrara says it suits hot, dry places and shade-tolerant varieties, not every vineyard.

Parc del Centre del Poblenou · Sant Martí

Dogs are allowed back in the two Poblenou park zones where they were supposedly banned

In March, Parcs i Jardins put up signs banning dogs from the Illa de la Sardana and Illa del Pou del Món sections of the park, but the decree that would have made it binding was never issued. After complaints and a 4,400-signature petition, the city said Thursday it is dropping the ban, and the signs are gone. Dogs can use the whole park on a leash; off-leash is only allowed in the shared area on the Illa d’Oliva Artés during set hours, and the district is considering moving that area.

Seven months on the signs, zero days in law.
